Support CATESOL with a Qualified Charitable Distribution from Your IRA

Satisfy your required minimum distribution while supporting education opportunities to teachers of English language learners.

What is a qualified charitable distribution (QCD)?

  • QCDs are a tax-advantaged way for individuals aged 70 1/2 and older to donate to charities, such as the CATESOL Education Foundation, directly from their IRA, potentially reducing their taxable income.
  • As direct transfers from an IRA to a charity, these donations can satisfy the minimum distribution requirement for individuals aged 70 and one-half or older without being taxed as income
  • In addition, giving to the CATESOL Education Foundation is a great way to share the love of teaching for future generations.

Your QCD must be made directly from your IRA custodian to the CATESOL Education Foundation on your behalf. Each financial institution has its own process for initiating a qualified charitable distribution. Account holders can sometimes find it challenging to access the right information. Many retirement plan administrators require you to use their distribution forms and comply with other requirements, so follow your financial institution’s forms and procedures to ensure you receive any potential tax benefits associated with this gift.

Because the gift goes directly to the charity without passing through your hands, the dollar amount of the gift may be excluded from your taxable income up to a maximum of $108,000 annually, with some exceptions.  Please consult your tax advisor for information regarding your specific exceptions.
